Have PolyTech model your wind turbine in order to establish figures for both the direct and indirect effects of a lightning strike

PolyTech has developed a range of design tools that allow us to perform numerical modelling of both direct and derived effects of a lightning strike on your wind turbine. This provides you with an effective supplement to physical tests and can help you save valuable time – especially if you introduce the modelling early in the development process.

Numerical modelling of phenomena linked to lightning
Using PolyTech’s specially developed numerical modelling software, we can simulate every electrical or electro-thermal phenomenon related to lightning.

We perform modelling to different degrees of detail, which means you have access to key forecasts on two levels:

  1. How materials behave at component level
  2. How components function at system level


Our customers have applied PolyTech’s expertise in numerical modelling for uses including:

  • Lightning Protection System design for turbine blades
  • Evaluation of current dispersion and respect distances in Lightning Protection Systems
  • Current and voltage dispersion in power and control systems subjected to the direct and derived effects of lightning
  • Design of earthing systems in difficult soil conditions or in close proximity to other infrastructure systems

 

The simulated geometries cover a broad spectrum: everything from the thickness of a coat of varnish on copper coils in electric machines (in µm), to terrain topographies in wind farms and on sea beds (in km).

The tools have been thoroughly verified through relevant tests, and utilise 3D/2D FEM analyses, FDTD and EMTP models in the frequency and time domain.

Insulation Coordination
PolyTech’s modelling tools can also be used to perform insulation coordination (IC) for our customers.

In such cases, we model your installation and analyse lightning flows and transient overvoltage to ensure that the components’ impulse withstand voltages are not exceeded.
